Internet Telephony
Internet telephony,
also known as (VoIP), Internet Voice or Voice over the
Internet, is a technology that allows you to make telephone calls using a
broadband Internet connection. Where as a regular telephone uses an analog
system, VoIP is digital. When using a VoIP system, you can make local
calls, long distance calls, cell phone calls, and even international
calls. You can make VoIP calls using a computer connected to broadband, or
a regular telephone connected to a broadband adaptor.
Internet Phone Equipment
A broadband Internet connection is required to make a VoIP call. If you
already have a broadband Internet Service for a computer you can make VoIP
calls. You can make VoIP calls using an adaptor that connects to your
regular telephone and a broadband modem. The person you are calling does
not need to be connected to a broadband connection or need any special
equipment, as the call is received by a regular telephone.
How to make VoIP calls
There
are several ways to start making VoIP calls. You can make a call with a
conventional phone connected to a VoIP phone adapter. This converts your
telephone analog signal to a digital signal. The call goes through your
local telephone company to a VoIP provider and then across the internet to
the local telephone company to connect to the number you dialed.
Alternatively, you can use a microphone headset plugged into your computer
and dial from your computer. The dialed number is routed through your
broadband modem and connects to the recipient’s phone.
Advantages of VoIP
With
VoIP, if you already have broadband Internet connection, you do not need
to maintain the additional costs of a regular phone service for long
distance calls. VoIP long distance calls are much less expensive to make
than traditional long distance service call charges.
Making Local and Long Distance Calls
Some
VoIP service providers offer free local calls, however long distance and
international calls charge a nominal per minute fee. Some service
providers charge a flat rate per minute.
