Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack![]() King Arthur (Score) [SOUNDTRACK]Hans Zimmer What are legends if not for reinventing -- and/or hyper-inflating into Hollywood summer fare? In retooling the Arthurian legend for the goth-beguiled video game age, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer did away with details small (the lady in the lake, sword in the stone, etc.) and large (this Arthur is actually Eastern European, by way of Rome). Composer Hans Zimmer picks up that gauntlet, producing an orchestral score bristling with massed brass, chorus and percussion -- if little of the indigenous mysticism that made his work on Gladiator/ so rewarding. What there is of that precious commodity is frontloaded via the song "Tell Me Know (What You See)," his evocative opening collaboration with Clannad's Moya Brennan. From there, Zimmer emphasized this version's Eastern conceits with a half-dozen suites of cues that thunder in the Russian classical tradition -- and all the melodic range of "Jingle Bells." Zimmer--not to mention Poledouris--has done it better, but fans of outsized orchestral Gothic moodfests may yet take this one to heart. --Jerry McCulley

![]() Monk [SOUNDTRACK]Jeff Beal With apologies to Columbo's Peter Falk, there's never been a television detective with quite so many nervous, tic 'n' quirk quotient of Tony Shalhoub's neurotic, OCD-bedeviled Adrian Monk. Composer Jeff Beal (Pollock, HBO's Carnivale) picks up the many loose threads of the lovably obsessed gumshoe's personality and weaves them into one of contemporary television's most consistently pleasing jazz-rooted scores. Anchored by a jaunty, guitar-driven theme (featured here in versions that span the show's pilot, regular series and an extended mix) that invokes the carefree verve of Django Reinhardt, this generous, 36-track CD contains music from all of the program's original dozen episodes. Though he infuses his work here with a variety of cool jazz incarnations, Beal's bright, evocative musical cues also occasionally recall the modernist rhythmic inventions of such early, angular Stewart Copeland scores as Rumble Fish and Wall Street. --Jerry McCulley

![]() De-Lovely [SOUNDTRACK]Various Artists - & Cole Porter At first glance, the approach picked for De-Lovely will be familiar to those who already own Red Hot + Blue: A Tribute to Cole Porter. On both albums, contemporary pop stars cover classics by Porter. But many of the interpretations on Red Hot + Blue were modernized, whereas the approach on De-Lovely is more traditional---it's the soundtrack to a biopic about Porter, after all, so a classic (though not quite period) sound prevails. What's surprising is how well many of the singers handle the songs without the crutch of a contemporary pop retooling. Who would have thought that Alanis Morissette had such a natural affinity for "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)," for instance? She fares equally well in her screen cameo, whereas Diana Krall sounds superb on "Just One of Those Things" but looks horribly uncomfortable in the film. Other good surprises include Robbie Williams's "It's De-Lovely" and Kevin Kline as Porter, coming across as a more tuneful Rex Harrison. Elvis Costello, meanwhile, confirms he's a better songwriter than singer, and as Linda Porter, Ashley Judd is hesitant at best. In a nice touch, a recording of Cole Porter himself performing "You're the Top" provides the album's coda. --Elisabeth Vincentelli |
