What
Is SACD?
Super Audio CDs (SACDs) offer some of the
highest-fidelity listening available today. Most SACDs
have been remastered to feature at least five channels
of surround sound. While some SACDs are hybrids
(playable on any standard CD player), to experience the
full impact of these discs, you'll need a proper SACD
playback system. |

Kind
Of Blue [Jazz SACD]
by Miles
Davis This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't
listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is
extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills,
if not of God's existence), listing John
Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on
saxophones, Bill
Evans (or, on "Freddie..

Lady
in Satin [Jazz SACD]
by Billie
Holiday
This is the first review of this particular SACD.
It is a Sony release in 2002 and has 11 tracks compared with the
1999 SACD of the same title which has 17 tracks. |

Dave Brubeck Boasting the first jazz instrumental to sell a million
copies, the Paul Desmond-penned "Take Five," Time Out
captures the celebrated jazz quartet at the height of both its
popularity and its powers. Recorded in 1959, the album combines
superb performances by pianist Brubeck, alto..

[SACD]
by Paco de Lucia This is a great performance. My review is mostly
based on the fact that this is a stereo SACD, not multichannel. I am
learning more about SACD every day, but was very disappointed that
it is only presented in stereo.

Terence Blanchard, et al Like George
Gershwin and Cole
Porter, the music of Jimmy McHugh is an essential part of the
American popular song canon, and jazz musicians have always been the
canon's greatest interpreters. On this CD, New Orleans-born
trumpeter Terence Blanchard..

Miles
Davis The most satisfying sort of audacity was the rule with
Miles Davis's second great quintet. One of six studio albums cut by
the group between 1965 and 1968, Miles Smiles finds them
executing three Wayne
Shorter compositions and one by the leader, along with Eddie
Harris's "Freedom Jazz Dance," former..

Steve Tyrell It is a rare occasion indeed when an artist can

Louis
Armstrong Maybe you've seen my opinionated writings elsewhere on
this server, maybe not; regardless I must state the Louie Armstrong
is the God of all music. Period. If you've seen the other groups,
singers and so forth then you might take me seriously. The variety
of music..

Billie
Holiday A harrowing classic, Billie Holiday's personal favorite
among her '50s albums captures the singer 17 months before her
death, her once honeyed voice, scarred and weakened from punishing
life, its ravages highlighted by the 1958 session's crisp..

Charles Mingus Mercurial bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus was
signed to Columbia Records for the briefest of time during 1959. His
Columbia recordings, however, remain some of the most inspired,
mood-jumping jazz in history. The flowing sadness of "Goodbye
Porkpie Hat"..

Miles

his early days as a sideman for Charlie
Parker, through his groundbreaking Birth of the Cool
sessions, to his stunning small groups of the '50s and '60s, through
to his electric renaissance..
