Opera Giuseppe Verdi - Don Carlos
Verdi - Don Carlos
This CD offers only highlights from the EMI studio recording so if you want an abbreviated version of the same performance this is a must have. It was recorded in 1971 and all the singers are in glorious form- Placido Domingo's voice is elegant, rich dark and hefty, making every line and scena dramatically convincing as Don Carlos, the son of the imperious Spanish King Phillip, an idealist, a dreamer, a frustrated romantic. All these traits Domingo delivers in a performance that is unsurpassed.
He was born to sing Don Carlos. Opposite Domingo's tour de force performance is the equally virtuosic Monsterrat Caballe.
As Elisabeth De Valois, she is regal, grand and has a voice of graceful beauty and dark middle register that gleams with velvet orutund tones. She is every bit the Queen and her conflicted emotional state is well enacted...
Don Carlos is a dark opera, perhaps Verdi's darkest. It is a melancholy, brooding piece of theater. Set in the dim Inquisition Era, politics mix with personal passions, religion clashes with state, and a young prince falls in love with his father's newest wife the Queen, his own stepmother. The music is a mixture of gloomy choruses and foreboding melodies with vibrant, elegant Verdian lines. The original French version was Verdi's entree to French Opera at the Paris Opera, the world's premier opera. His opera was a smash hit. It has never sounded better than on here.
For the best French version listen to Placido Domingo and Katia Ricciarelli version with a cast that includes Luisa Valentini Terrani and Nicolai Ghiurov. |

Verdi - Don Carlos
If you've been waiting for an authentic, 100-proof French-language DON CARLOS with no textual mix-and-matching from Verdi's later revisions of the opera, this live recording dating from October 2004 is for you. It has every note the audience at Paris heard at the premiere on March 11, 1867, and then some, because it includes music Verdi submitted to the Paris Opera but cut in rehearsals before the first night.
Its sheer comprehensiveness (at 245+ minutes, the opera stretches almost to PARSIFAL length) makes it the French-language CARLOS of choice for the time being. Of its two major-label rivals in French, Pappano/EMI omits the opening choral introduction and the ballet music and makes use of a schizophrenic edition entirely the conductor's own, corresponding to no staging seen in the composer's lifetime (Pappano freely cherry-picks from Verdi's revisions of the 1880s, and at one point jumps forward 20 years in mid-duet); the pioneering Abbado/DG, on the other hand, just gives us a French-language recording of the familiar
Modena edition of the opera as staged in 1886 (that is, the restoration of the Fontainebleau act followed by Verdi's tightened four-act version [i.e., DON CARLO, no "S"],
which at times is strikingly different musically from the French CARLOS with which he began), plus a disc of appendices that de Billy incorporates into the performance proper. |

Verdi: Don Carlos (complete opera); Alagna, Hampson, van Dam Don Carlos has been very lucky on record. It seems that every artist involved with this opera is forced to give his best. There are treasurable recordings conducted by Santini (DG), Giulini (EMI) and Solti (DECCA). When Abbado recorded the original French version in 1984, it was a revelation. The original French is much better than the Italian translation. But unfortunately, in spite of Placido Domingo and Abbado' s superb conducting, the rest of the cast was rather disappointing. Tony Pappano readily shows that he has Verdi in his blood in this, his first Verdi recording. The cast is the finest that could be assembled today. All of the leads give terrific performances and everyone is in good voice.
Jose van Dam has been criticized for being too light of voice for Philippe. Nonsense, he sings with warmth and conviction, and should not be accused of not being Ghiaurov or Siepi.
Alagna, Mattila and Hampson are fresh voiced and very involved. Waltraut Meier is very erotic and sensuous.
This is a very successful affair, and I doubt that a better Don Carlos will come in many years. |
