The Way It Is
Bruce Hornsby Music CD Bruce Hornsby is now best known for his stints playing keyboards with the Grateful Dead and for his
involvement in such post-Dead projects as the Further Festival. An incomparable keyboard wizard whose skills are widely admired
while his albums are consistently underrated, Hornsby's greatest commercial success is slipping rapidly into the past. His 1986
debut, The Way It Is (recorded with his band, the Range) is the high watermark of his career commercially, having sold
several million copies and spawned a trio of hit singles, including "Mandolin Rain," "Every Little Kiss," and of course,
the No. 1 smash, "The Way It Is." Overall, it's Hornsby's most tuneful album, though not necessarily his most accomplished
work. His is a catalog that is long overdue for reevaluation. --Daniel Durchholz.
I was a junior high schooler watching NBC's music video show "Friday Night Videos" (if I remember the name correctly) back
in 1986 when I heard "The Way It Is." It wasn't until the early 90s when I finally picked-up this CD; used. I almost
traded it in about five years ago for something else. Needless to say, I still have it, and suprisingly (to me) it has become
one of my favorite albums today.
The Amazon.com review was right on the mark, by stating that Bruce Hornsby and the (venerable) Range are "long overdue for
reevaluation." The piano work is suberb, Hornsby's vocals are so smooth, and the writing reflects subtle notes of
sociological problems, and life's wonderful moments ("The Way It Is" and "Mandolin Rain" respectively). His backup band
rounded out the sound of this album very well, making it one of the most complete and cherished recordings of the 1980s.
It's been out of the limelight for years, but for those who dig this album up, a wonderful listening experience will
become their's for a long time to come. |

Harbor Lights
Bruce Hornsby Music CD Harbor Lights shares the spot with Hot House as my favourite Hornsby album. If you can believe it I'm
not too crazy on his musical time spent with the Range which probably contradicts the majority of his (former) fans and
critics. I say "former" because Hornsby going independent was risky and even though I thought his music improved extremely,
some individuals obviously lost their interest seeing how he has become less popular. I admit he did develop some absolutely
great songs with the Range but I think they still held him back. Besides, who wants to hear the same sort of music over and over
again. Why not try something new and not become so monotonous and repetitious. Hornsby is one of the rare musicians who
embraces change. If I still haven't convinced you and you favour his old songs, then there are some versions on his live cd "Here
Come the Noisemakers" which I feel are much better than his original recordings, such as "The Way It Is", "The Red Plains",
"Stander on the Mountain" and especially "The Valley Road". Getting back to Harbor Lights, I feel he really broke through
here and though it shows early progress in his independent career some of his best work appears. I can't name any one song
in particular because all of them are great. Although I really do enjoy China Doll for some reason. No matter if you're a
Hornsby fan or not the album Harbor Lights proves he is one of the most passionate, unique, consummate musicians in the last
two decades. Who else would leave a comfortable position in a popular band and go out on his or her own to reach a different
level in their music? It is a quality that many people don't have and don't recognize. Most musicians today are more
celebrities than they are real musicians. But Hornsby assures us with Harbor Lights that he is at heart a musician. |

This is an absolutely great compilation of Bruce Hornsby's work. This basically gives you the essential songs that Hornsby has penned from his first 9 albums. There are definitely a lot of missing songs however, and obviously not every song from every album is in here. I would recommend this as a followup to the Bruce Hornsby Anthology which gives you every song from the first 4 albums. This book is heavily weighted to the album Halcyon Days. I wish all of the songs were in there, but the ones that are have impeccable transcriptions in them and all of the difficult solo parts transcribed. This is a very very good book for the songs included in the compilation.
