The
Directors - Steven Spielberg (2000) DVD
~ Directors
Steven Spielberg today is the best director in the industry.
Every movie he has done has his magic woven into the story.
You can always tell when he has done a movie, because all of
his movies are excellent, and contain his magic touch. As an
aspiring director, producer, and writer, this dvd was an
excellent learning tool, which taght me about Steven
Spielberg's movies, how they were done, his opinions, his
views, just hearing him speak is captivating. He is a genius,
there is no other way to put it, almost all the movies he has
done, everyone has seen, and they never "flopped" at
the box office. He has done some of the greatest, and most
popular movies of all time like Jurassic Park, E.T., Jaws,
Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, all dvd..

The
Terminal (Widescreen Edition) (2004) DVD
~ Tom Hanks
Like an airport running at peak efficiency, The Terminal
glides on the consummate skills of its director and star.
Having refined their collaborative chemistry on Saving
Private Ryan and Catch Me if You Can, Steven
Spielberg and Tom Hanks mesh like the precision gears of a
Rolex, turning a delicate, not-very-plausible scenario into a
lovely modern-age fable (partly based on fact) that's both
technically impressive and subtly moving. It's Spielberg in
Capra mode, spinning the featherweight tale of Victor Navorski
(Hanks, giving a finely tuned performance), an Eastern
European who arrives at New York's Kennedy Airport just as his
(fictional) homeland has fallen to a coup, forcing him, with
no valid citizenship, to take indefinite residence in the
airport's expansive International Arrivals Terminal (an
astonishing full-scale set that inspires Spielberg's most
elegant visual strategies). Spielberg said he made this film
in part to alleviate the anguish of wartime America, and his
master's touch works wonders on the occasionally mushy
material; even Stanley Tucci's officious terminal director and
Catherine Zeta-Jones's mixed-up flight attendant come off
(respectively) as forgivable and effortlessly charming. With
this much talent involved, The Terminal transcends its
minor shortcomings to achieve a rare degree of cinematic
grace. |
Steven
Spielberg Presents Taken (2002) DVD
~ Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg's alien abduction opus Taken is what
happens when you cross-breed Close Encounters of the Third
Kind with The Waltons. Obviously flushed with the
success of the TV miniseries Band of Brothers,
Spielberg's Dreamworks studio has created an equally epic
10-part story chronicling 50 years of habitual abduction over
several generations of three American families. Beginning with
the most notorious alien cover-up in U.S. history, the 1947
"crash" at Roswell, New Mexico, Taken
introduces the "Greys" and the families they
routinely abduct, probe, and, in a couple of cases, impregnate
over the course of the ten 90-minute episodes.

The
Adventures of Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark/The
Temple of Doom/The Last Crusade) - Full Screen (2003) DVD
~ Harrison Ford
This long-awaited DVD set of the Indiana Jones trilogy
is a classy set built for the fan. However, the DVD-extras
junky will be disappointed because there's not a bevy of
extras: no storyboards, galleries, commentaries, or
long-rumored deleted scenes. The three films are the real star
here, restored frame by frame and--blessedly--unchanged from
their initial release (the first movie has been retitled on
the packaging only). Anyone who has grown up with TV airings
will be amazed by what they see,... |
E.T.
- The Extra-Terrestrial (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
(1982) DVD
~ Henry Thomas
Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his
loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas)
struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered
Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong
commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas
gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend,
Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression
as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids'
mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with
all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but
they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we
see today. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to the VHS
Tape edition. |
Empire
of the Sun (1987) DVD
~ Christian Bale
Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least
successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly
follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a
brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of
China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an
afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation,
from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned,
desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning.
Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music
(the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G.
Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's.
