The island of Pasman is in a way twin brother to the island
of Ugljan because they are of approximately the same surface area and
position, and with similarly situated towns. On the island of Ugljan there are
places such as Tkon, Ugrinic, Kraj, Pasman, Barotul, Nevidjane, Dobropoljana,
Banj and Zdrelac. There are many vineyards, olive groves and herbs on the
island. There are also many pebbled and sandy beaches. One of the most
beautiful sandy beaches is in Mrljane, a village famous for its small swamp
with healing mud. From the top of the island you can see the National Park
Kornati. On the island there are numerous paths for mountain bicyclism.
The island of Hvar will attract you with lavender scent,
pleasant Mediterranean climate and more of sunny days in year than any other
place in Croatia. In the town of Hvar you can experience exceptional
cultural-historical heritage together with health programs and beautiful
nature. 700 hundred-year-old town walls surround the town. It's center, the
largest in Dalmatia, is surrounded with Renaissance and Baroque palaces. Hvar
is a trendy destination where you can have a good time in the evening and
night, while party starts already in the afternoon in some of the bars with
après-beach programme. You can dance in your bikinis! Guided by the love of
history head to the town of Stari Grad. Smaller places such as Vrboska or
Jelsa are beautiful peaceful and quiet places with narrow streets and romantic
The wine on Hvar is something worth talking about. One of the most famous
wines is Bogdanusa, a delicious white wine that compliments all seafood
dishes. There are many others such as Ivan Dolac, Zlatan Plavac and Dobrogost.
Hvar cuisine is like Dalmatian cuisine in general, light, prepared with very
little oil, seasoned with plenty of marjoram and basil. Gregada is a well
known seafood dish in which several different types of fish are prepared with
potatoes. Dessert choices include gingerbread cookies and “Cvit”, a dry cake
made with aniseed.
A Taste of Croatia...savoring the food, people and traditions of Croatia's Adriatic coast...is both a user-friendly cookbook and an intriguing travel memoir dedicated to the land that the New York Times recently dubbed the "New Riviera." Packed with straight-forward recipes, photos, food facts and anecdotes, the author has created a publication that goes beyond the bounds of what makes a great cookbook...she delivers the spirit of the culture, the country and the cuisine and then ties it all together with a collection of recipes that will make you want to run to your kitchen and start cooking. Today, throughout America, we are hearing more and more about the benefits of eating fresh, seasonal, local foods that are grown and produced using sustainable methods. However, for today's cooks, it can be difficult to know exactly how to incorporate these concepts into our busy lives without it being too complicated, time consuming or expensive. Toss in a dash of ethnicity and even the most competent home cook can become discouraged.
Fear not: A Taste of Croatia provides a straightforward and easy way to celebrate a culture whose dishes can be created anywhere fresh ingredients can be found...all the while capturing you with an inspiring story that will allow you to set out on your own adventure...without leaving your favorite chair.
A Taste of Croatia is based on the author and her husband's three-year odyssey sailing the Adriatic coast and living aboard their 50-foot sailboat. It is the story of the lands they explored, the people they met, the markets they visited and the foods they enjoyed.
Presented as a well organized, easy-to-use cookbook, most of the recipes have been savored by generations of Croatians and all of the recipes have been adapted for use in American kitchens. It is the author's hope to provide each reader with his or her own enriching, delicious, inspiring and thought-provoking "taste of Croatia."
